All cells require oxygen to produce ATP – the molecular fuel source that allows cells to divide and to produce cellular products. In the skin, cellular products which are produced using ATP include barrier lipids that keep skin moist and resistant to environmentally-induced sensitivity; collagen and elastin – skin’s youthening proteins; hormones which deliver vital messages between cells; and enzymes, which convert nutrients into useful skin substances.
